From Concept to Container: How a European Brand Launched Its Custom Keyboard Case Line
At Keysco, we've partnered with dozens of brands to bring custom wireless keyboards and keyboard cases from initial concept to finished products. This case study follows a European accessory brand (name withheld for confidentiality) through their OEM journey, highlighting the milestones, challenges, and solutions that led to a successful product launch.
The Client & Their Vision
The client was an established mobile accessory retailer looking to expand into tablet keyboards. Their requirements included: a custom keyboard case compatible with iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab models, unique exterior branding, specific scissor-switch key feel, backlighting in their brand color, and a 360-degree hinge design for versatile usage modes. They had no prior experience manufacturing keyboards.
Phase 1: Design & Engineering (Weeks 1-4)
After signing the NDA and sharing their design brief, our engineering team created initial 3D CAD drawings. The client reviewed and requested modifications to key travel (reduced from 2.0mm to 1.8mm for a snappier feel) and hinge torque (increased to hold the tablet at steeper viewing angles). Using our in-house mold-making capabilities, we produced prototype tooling and delivered functional samples within four weeks—a timeline that would be impossible without vertical integration across PCB, injection molding, and assembly.
Phase 2: Prototyping & Refinement (Weeks 5-8)
The client tested the samples extensively. Feedback led to three adjustments: a softer PU leather for the folio exterior, brighter backlighting for low-light visibility, and repositioned magnet alignment for better sleep/wake functionality. Our R&D team incorporated these changes and produced updated samples for final approval.

Phase 3: Mass Production (Weeks 9-14)
With samples approved, we initiated mass production. Our SMT lines populated PCBs with Bluetooth 5.2 modules, our injection molding lines produced custom-colored case shells, and our assembly lines integrated scissor-switch keyboards with hinges and magnets. Multi-stage QC checks—in-circuit testing for PCBs, key actuation force testing, hinge rotation cycle testing, and final visual inspection—ensured every unit met specifications.

Phase 4: Logistics & Delivery (Week 15)
The completed order was packed in custom-branded retail packaging, palletized, and shipped via sea freight to the client's warehouse in Hamburg. Total lead time from design sign-off to delivery: 11 weeks.
